In 2010 the Council proposed in 2010 to demolish Churchgate, and to re-build about half of Hitchin's town centre, including
a superstore, larger than any other building in the town centre, and to reduce the number of car parking spaces. This would
have been at the expense of three years' disruption of existing town centre businesses, in the middle of a recession. In
return, the developer would have received all rents for the next 125 years.
Strangely, Hitchin residents were not particularly keen on this idea, and ultimately their elected Members chose to decline this interesting opportunity.
