Hitchin Town Hall
Hitchin's Town Hall - a fine, Italianate-style building first opened in 1901, and now Grade 2 listed - is currently being converted to provide a district-wide Museum for North Hertfordshire, while retaining its role as a major community venue for Hitchin. The multi-million pound conversion
project is being managed by the District Council, and it has recently emerged that important architectural features of the interior have been damaged or otherwise lost during the conversion work. We do not believe that these changes were authorised by the original Listed Building Consent for
the conversion, and are now the subject of a new planning application. Community groups, including The Hitchin Society, are appalled at the damage caused to the historic structure, and are strongly opposed to the new planning application, considering that the architectural features should be
reinstated as part of any new consent.
